Christmas decorations DIY
Our first Canada Helloween has barely passed away, but neighborhood Canadiens have started to decorate their houses for the Christmas and New Year. A can understand the festive decorations in shopwindows – they are always ready to the next gift season. And I can understand the people who have hang the garlands and wreath decorations outdoor – it is quite cold even in November, and it is not clever to wait for real cold for outdoor works. But I was really surprised to see decorated Christmas trees inside the living rooms! Walking on the streets and watching the lights, balls, and sparkles inspired us to start the preparations early this year.
But today I want to show our Lilac balls decorations which were made especially for my friend Ailin Gasparyan and her New Year Photo Shoots a year ago. There were two rooms for photo shoots, decorated with white-lilac-purple and gold and brown colors. We had many golden decorations, but no lilac or purple. So, we have made very nice lilac balls out of fabric waste and simple supplies from DIY shop.
My mom has sewed this awesome new ball dress to Ana’s old porcelain doll.
We’ve used:
Styrofoam balls, acrylic colors, tulle, glass pearl beads and pins for the fist kind of balls, silky fabric for the second one, and wooden sticks, needle, threads and scissors. Organza or lace fabric can be used instead of tulle, crystals instead of pearl beads, and glue instead of pins 🙂
We had balls of three different sizes
Two balls were really large 🙂

First of all, prick a part of the balls on the wooden sticks.

Paint them with acrylic paints

And let them dry

Cut the tulle to the squares large enough for wrap the balls plus a couple centimetres. In addition, cut the tulle ribbons for holding the tulle on the balls.

We need one tulle square and one ribbon for one ball

Wrap the ball…

Stretch the tulle…

And tie the ribbon

Then trim the edges of tulle to make fluffy pompom

Take the pins and pearl beads…

And pin the beads to the ball!

You can make different patterns with the beads!
Now, let’s make silky balls.

Cut the circles out of silky fabric, large enough for wrapping the balls

Make the simple running stitch along the edge of fabric

Pull the thread and form a “pocket”

Put the ball into the pocket

Pull the thread, tighten and secure the fabric with the few more stitches

Now the top of the ball can be decorated with something 🙂

I can’t find the close-up photo, but here you can see the fluffy pompom made of tulle on the top of the silky ball. And my best man 🙂
One of the ways to use this light weighted balls is to hang them on the ceiling! But be careful with the small children, they always love to play with balls!
Other ideas: use the payettes instead of beads, or use fabric with flowers pattern 🙂
